about
Claire de Caluwe (She/Her) was born in Amsterdam in 1999. She began her dance training in ballet at the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam before completing her pre-dance education at Codarts, Rotterdam. She went on to study Urban Contemporary Dance at the University of the Arts in Amsterdam (BA) and, in 2020, joined the Dutch dance company Scapino Ballet in Rotterdam. Since 2021, she has been working as a freelance dancer and model.
In 2023, Claire became part of the project-based dance company Nagelhus Schia Productions in Norway, where she contributed to new creations and repertoire, collaborating with choreographers such as Sasha Waltz, Hege Haagenhund, and Crystal Pite.
Alongside working with choreographers like Ed Wubbe, Dalton Jansen, and Joost Vrouenraets, Claire also creates her own choreographic work in collaboration with Bo Jacobs. Her debut piece, LIMP (2023), has been presented on various stages, including the 37th Choreography Competition Hannover, Platform 14 Berlin, Nederlandse Dansdagen 2024, and the Amsterdam Fringe Festival 2024.
Claire has increasingly explored the intersection of dance and film, leading to the creation of her first short film, Dermis, which premiered in 2024 in Amsterdam in collaboration with videographer Justin Bekker.
"As a dance artist, I find value in communication through movement. How can bodies communicate with each other in a way that allows the audience to share and feel in the experience?
Immersing myself in a pool of imagination and guiding the outside observer on this journey is central to my creative process. My initiation point often comes from a place of vulnerability, delving into the raw inner world of an individual.
This process reignites my 'inner child' and sense of happiness—elements I believe are essential to nurture.
Dance is a channel for me to externalize everything I gather—thoughts, desires, fears—making art a poetic translation of life. I am particularly inspired by collaborations and interdisciplinary projects that merge different artistic forms into something new and compelling."
